Richmond, Virginia — The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of eastern and southeastern Virginia as confidence increases in a high-impact winter storm expected this weekend. The watch is in effect from Friday night through Sunday, with significant snowfall and strong winds listed as the primary threats.

Forecasters indicate that most of the region, excluding the far northern tier of counties, could see accumulating snow, particularly across south and southeast Virginia. While exact snowfall totals are still being refined, the potential exists for enough snow to cause dangerous travel conditions, especially on major roadways such as Interstate 95, Interstate 64, Interstate 295, and Route 17.

In addition to snowfall, strong winds are expected to develop, especially near the coast. These winds could lead to blowing and drifting snow, sharply reducing visibility and making road conditions treacherous. Coastal areas may also experience minor coastal flooding, further compounding impacts for communities near tidal waterways.

Temperatures are forecast to turn very cold, allowing snow and ice to linger on untreated roads and bridges well into the weekend. Officials warn that travel conditions could deteriorate quickly, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours when road treatment is less effective.

Residents across the Richmond metro area, Hampton Roads, and surrounding communities are encouraged to prepare now. This includes monitoring forecasts, checking winter emergency kits, and planning for possible travel disruptions. Those with weekend travel plans should consider alternate schedules or routes if conditions worsen.

The National Weather Service stresses that while confidence is increasing, forecast details may change, and the Winter Storm Watch could be upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning or Advisory as the event draws closer.

Updates will continue to be issued as newer data becomes available. Stay informed through weather.gov, local emergency management, and trusted media outlets as this potentially significant winter storm approaches eastern Virginia.
