Norfolk, Virginia – Rising water levels along the Chesapeake Bay and lower James River could flood roads and waterfront areas as early as this evening, with impacts peaking overnight into Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect through Monday morning for southside Hampton Roads, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Newport News. Water levels may reach up to 1 foot above ground level in vulnerable shoreline areas during high tide cycles.
Flooding is most likely along low-lying roads near the Elizabeth River, portions of Shore Drive, and neighborhoods bordering the Chesapeake Bay. Drivers could encounter water-covered streets late Sunday night through the Monday morning commute, especially around high tide.
Breezy onshore winds of 20 to 30 mph are pushing water toward the coast, increasing the risk of tidal flooding. While most inland areas remain dry with highs in the 50s, isolated light showers may linger across far southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina through early afternoon.
Avoid driving through flooded roads and allow extra time for travel near the coast. Residents in flood-prone areas should move vehicles to higher ground and monitor water levels overnight.
The advisory remains in effect through early Monday, with additional updates expected if water levels rise higher than forecast.
