Chicago, Illinois – Storms set to develop within hours Monday afternoon could snarl commutes across major corridors like I-90, I-55, and I-294, with heavy rain and damaging winds creating rapidly changing road conditions by the evening rush.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, northern Illinois faces multiple rounds of thunderstorms Monday, with the most dangerous period expected from mid-afternoon through late evening. The region sits in an enhanced severe risk zone, where damaging winds up to 60 mph, large hail, and localized flooding are all possible.

Chicago, Rockford, Joliet, and Aurora will see highs between 68° and 79° Monday before storms intensify. Rainfall rates could exceed 1 inch per hour in stronger cells, increasing the risk of flash flooding, especially in low-lying and urban areas. Rivers including the Rock, Fox, and Des Plaines are most vulnerable to renewed rises, with impacts possible into Tuesday.

Travel could become hazardous quickly on east-west routes, where crosswinds and heavy rain reduce visibility. Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and allow extra time for evening travel. Charge devices and secure outdoor items ahead of incoming winds.

Conditions improve Tuesday as cooler air settles in, with highs dropping into the low 60s and upper 50s by Wednesday. Additional alerts may be issued as storm timing becomes clearer Monday morning.
