Nashville, TN – Forecasters are warning residents in the Tennessee Valley and southeastern Texas to prepare for possible flash flooding today as heavy rain sweeps across the region.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, chances for flash flooding increased Wednesday afternoon after new model data showed stronger storm development. Some areas are now expected to receive more than 5 inches of rainfall, with hourly rates exceeding 2 inches by the end of the day.

The affected zone stretches from eastern Texas through the Tennessee Valley, where a “slight risk” of excessive rainfall is in effect. NOAA officials caution that the combination of intense rainfall and saturated ground could quickly lead to dangerous flooding in low-lying areas, roadways, and small creeks.

Authorities are reminding the public to stay weather aware and keep multiple ways of receiving warnings. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and follow the safety advice: “Turn around, don’t drown.”

The flash flood threat remains in place through tonight, and residents across the region are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and take precautions as the storm system continues to move eastward.
