Chicago, IL – Much of the Midwest and Great Lakes region will see their first widespread snowfall of the season over the next few days, according to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center (WPC).

Forecasters say heavy lake effect snow is expected across portions of Michigan and northern Indiana, with totals ranging from 4 to 8 inches, and isolated areas exceeding that near Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Additional light to moderate snow will extend southwest into Iowa and eastward into Ohio and western Pennsylvania through Monday evening.

“This will be the first notable snow event of the season for many areas,” the WPC reported, adding that cold air and gusty winds will fuel multiple rounds of snow showers into midweek.

The heaviest accumulations are likely in west-central Michigan, northwest Indiana, and the Upper Peninsula, where persistent lake effect bands could produce locally higher totals. Travel may become slick or snow-covered in these regions, particularly overnight and during early morning commutes.

Forecasters note that additional rounds of lake effect snow are possible through the middle of next week as the chilly pattern holds across the Great Lakes.
