Niagara Falls, NY – Residents and travelers near Niagara Falls are being warned to prepare for days of hazardous winter weather as a prolonged lake-effect snowstorm moves into western New York.

According to the National Weather Service Buffalo, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday through 4 p.m. Wednesday for Niagara County. Snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches are forecast, with wind gusts up to 50 mph creating severe blowing and drifting snow.

The most dangerous travel conditions are expected along Interstate 190, the Niagara Scenic Parkway, and Route 31, where rapidly shifting snowbands may lead to sudden whiteout conditions. Forecasters warn that snowfall rates could reach 2 inches per hour, especially Sunday night into Monday and again Tuesday evening.

The storm is expected to impact the Monday through Wednesday morning commutes, with deep snow and reduced visibility making travel treacherous or potentially life-threatening at times.

Gusty winds may also lead to isolated power outages and fallen tree branches. Wind chills may dip below zero during overnight hours early in the week.

Officials urge residents to complete preparations early, avoid travel during peak snowfall periods, and monitor forecast updates closely as conditions evolve.
