Rensselaer, IN – Residents in Jasper, Newton, and Benton counties are being warned about a rise in scams after the counties’ sheriffs joined forces to deliver a unified public safety message.

According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Shannon Cothran of Newton County, Sheriff Pat Williamson of Jasper County, and Sheriff John Cox of Benton County collaborated on a joint video to alert the public about fraudulent schemes targeting the area.

Sheriff Cothran said the partnership aims to keep all three counties informed. “We’ve been doing scam videos for a while now, but I wanted to get my neighboring sheriffs in on this. They are each a valuable resource. We all talk about what is going on in our counties, compare notes, and do what we can to keep each other informed.”

Sheriff Williamson emphasized the regional impact of such crimes. “If a scam is affecting the people of a neighboring county, it will affect those in Jasper County as well,” he said.

Sheriff Cox added that protecting residents’ financial security is a top priority. “We want to do whatever we can to make our residents aware of potential scams. Our residents work hard for their money, and we want to help protect their future and their state of mind. These scams can turn into a nightmare,” he said.

The sheriffs are encouraging residents to download theSheriffApp, a free mobile application providing alerts about severe weather, road closures, and local safety updates. Officials hope the combined effort will give residents the tools they need to recognize and avoid scams.
