Jasper, Ark. – A dangerous thunderstorm with 60 mph winds and quarter-size hail is threatening parts of northern Arkansas Monday afternoon, putting drivers and residents at risk of damage and flash flooding.
According to the National Weather Service office in Little Rock, the storm was spotted just before 2 p.m. near Jasper and is moving east at 30 mph. The warning remains in effect until at least 2:30 p.m. Communities in the path include Marshall, Marsena, Carver, Point Peter, Bohannon, Piercetown, Watts, St. Joe, Gilbert, Bass, Canaan and Morning Star.
Hail damage to vehicles, siding, and roofs is possible, and residents are urged to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Torrential rain with this system could trigger flash flooding, particularly along low-lying roads. Authorities advise drivers not to attempt travel through flooded roadways.
The storm is expected to continue east through Newton and Searcy counties, with additional advisories possible as the system develops. Residents should monitor alerts and be ready for rapidly changing conditions through the evening.
