NEWPORT, NC – The calm, cool air across coastal North Carolina this morning won’t last much longer. Clouds will thicken, winds will shift, and steady rain will arrive by early Friday — just in time for the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, moisture from the Gulf will surge northeast, bringing a 90% chance of rain Friday with breezy north winds gusting to 15 mph. Most areas around Newport, Havelock, and Morehead City could see a half to three-quarters of an inch of rainfall, with the potential for heavier pockets near the coast.

Friday’s high near 51°F will make it a raw, damp day, ideal for staying indoors if possible. By Saturday, rain chances drop to around 50%, though showers may redevelop into Sunday, keeping roads slick for weekend travel. Drivers should expect reduced visibility, ponding on low-lying roads, and slower travel along U.S. Route 70 and Highway 24.

Behind the system, a cooler and drier air mass will settle in by early next week, bringing sunny skies and highs in the upper 40s by Monday. Nights will turn brisk, with lows dipping to the low 30s inland and upper 30s along the beaches.
