Newport, N.C. – A wet and stormy stretch is setting up for eastern North Carolina, with daily rain chances through early next week likely to bring flooding concerns and travel delays.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport, showers and thunderstorms could start as early as Friday afternoon, with coverage and intensity increasing into the weekend. Rainfall could be heavy at times, with some areas receiving between a quarter and half an inch per round of storms. Gusty winds and lightning remain the main hazards, especially during evening hours.

Communities across Carteret and Craven counties should expect repeated rounds of storms from Saturday into Monday, when rain chances reach 70 percent each day. Conditions may create ponding on roadways, slick driving surfaces, and possible disruptions to outdoor events.

Drivers on U.S. 70 and local coastal routes should use caution during downpours, where visibility could quickly be reduced. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid flooded roadways and secure outdoor items that may be blown around in storm gusts.

Rain and storm chances begin to ease by Tuesday night, but scattered showers may linger into midweek. Additional advisories could be issued if rainfall totals increase or localized flooding develops.
