Newport, North Carolina – Thunderstorms capable of flash flooding are expected to move into eastern North Carolina by early Thursday afternoon, threatening travel along U.S. 70 and U.S. 17.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, scattered thunderstorms will begin after 2 p.m. Thursday, with a 60% chance of rain in Newport, Beaufort, and surrounding areas. Storms could produce rainfall totals between half and three-quarters of an inch, increasing the risk of standing water and localized flooding, especially in low-lying or poorly drained roadways.
Motorists should avoid flooded routes and allow extra travel time during peak afternoon hours. Wind gusts could reach 16 mph. Flash flooding remains the primary hazard, particularly in Carteret, Craven, and Onslow counties.
Showers may continue into Thursday night with thunder possible before 8 p.m. Friday brings more scattered storms and a high near 86°F. Storm chances drop to 30% Friday night and Saturday, offering a break before another brief round of showers on Sunday.
Saturday looks partly sunny and dry across most of the Crystal Coast with highs near 87°F. However, keep an umbrella handy Sunday, just in case.
Rain chances drop early next week, with drier, milder weather likely by Monday and Tuesday.
Stay weather-aware and watch for additional advisories from the National Weather Service if flooding risks increase.
