Dry and cool conditions across eastern North Carolina are creating an increased fire danger this afternoon, just hours ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

According to the National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City, temperatures started the day in the 20s across the region before warming to highs near 50 degrees under sunny skies. Despite the mild afternoon temperatures, low humidity levels combined with dry vegetation are increasing the potential for fires to start and spread quickly.

The elevated fire danger is expected to peak this afternoon, particularly in areas with dry fuels such as grasslands, wooded areas, and roadside vegetation. While no precipitation is forecast, the dry air mass will persist through the evening.

Conditions tonight will remain cool and dry as residents ring in the New Year. Temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 30s during evening celebrations, with increasing high clouds late. While winds are not expected to be strong, the lack of moisture will continue to support fire spread if an ignition occurs.

Drivers along U.S. Highway 70, U.S. Highway 17, and surrounding secondary roads are urged to avoid discarding cigarettes or creating sparks near dry roadside vegetation. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents should use caution with fireworks, fire pits, or any open flames during New Year’s Eve activities.

New Year’s Day is expected to remain dry, with seasonable temperatures and continued low humidity before conditions gradually change later in the week.

The National Weather Service advises residents to remain fire-aware, properly extinguish any heat sources, and report smoke or fires promptly to local authorities. Even small ignition sources can lead to fast-moving fires under these conditions.

While travel impacts are not expected, the fire risk poses a public safety concern heading into one of the busiest outdoor celebration periods of the year.
