Newport, NC – After a stretch of calm, sunny skies, a wetter pattern is on the way for eastern North Carolina. Clouds will build Thursday afternoon before a broad coastal system pushes ashore late Thursday night, bringing steady rain and cooler air through Saturday. Drivers and holiday travelers should expect slower commutes and standing water in low-lying areas by Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches between Friday and Saturday, with locally higher amounts possible near the Crystal Coast. Rain chances rise sharply to 90% by Friday, continuing through much of Saturday before tapering into scattered showers Sunday.

Winds will stay moderate, gusting near 15 mph along U.S. 70 and Highway 24. While major flooding isn’t expected, brief downpours could reduce visibility, especially during early morning or evening commutes. Keep headlights on, slow down on wet pavement, and avoid driving through flooded intersections.

Temperatures will stay seasonable, with highs near 52°F Friday and 54°F Saturday. By Sunday, partial clearing will bring milder air and a return to sunshine by Monday.

Residents should keep umbrellas handy and plan indoor alternatives as early December’s coastal rain makes its mark across Carteret and Onslow Counties.
