St. John’s, NL – Light freezing drizzle and thick morning fog disrupted travel across St. John’s on Thursday as Newfoundland dealt with a shift from snow to rain and drizzle through the afternoon.
According to Environment Canada, the weather system began early Thursday morning with freezing rain and low visibility, reducing sightlines to just 0.2 kilometers at St. John’s International Airport by 9:30 a.m. NDT. Winds reached gusts of up to 60 km/h, combining with below-zero temperatures to create a wind chill near -7.
The agency warned of slick road conditions and deteriorating visibility through midday, with periods of rain or snow continuing into Thursday night. Temperatures are expected to hover near freezing, with an overnight low of -2°C and a 40 percent chance of additional flurries or rain showers.
Friday’s forecast calls for mainly cloudy skies and a 40 percent chance of flurries by late afternoon. Winds will diminish slightly, though gusts of up to 40 km/h remain likely. Highs will reach just 2°C, with the wind chill keeping conditions feeling much colder.
Residents are advised to allow extra travel time, use fog lights where necessary, and watch for icy patches on sidewalks and roadways, particularly during morning and evening commutes.
