Newburgh, New York – Travel across the Hudson Valley could become nearly impossible by late Sunday afternoon as blizzard conditions take hold with up to 22 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 45 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday for Orange and Putnam counties. The heaviest snow and strongest winds are expected Sunday night into Monday.

Forecasters call for 14 to 22 inches of accumulation across the region, with snowfall rates increasing overnight. Winds gusting up to 45 mph will create widespread blowing snow and visibility below a quarter mile, leading to prolonged whiteout conditions along Interstate 84, the New York State Thruway and Route 9.

Heavy, wind-driven snow combined with strong gusts could bring down tree limbs and power lines, raising the risk of sporadic power outages in communities including Newburgh, Middletown, Carmel and Cold Spring. Both the Monday morning and evening commutes face major disruption.

Officials urge residents to avoid all non-emergency travel, prepare a winter survival kit if driving is unavoidable and monitor state DOT updates. Blizzard conditions will continue into Monday evening before gradually easing after 6 p.m., though drifting snow may linger overnight.
