Newaygo, Michigan – Rising water along the Muskegon River could begin impacting homes as early as Monday evening, with flood stage expected to be reached and conditions worsening through the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Flood Watch is in effect for multiple points along the Muskegon River, including Newaygo, Croton, Bridgeton, and Evart, starting Monday evening and continuing through next Sunday. River levels near Newaygo were already measured at 10.2 feet late Sunday morning, just below the 11.0-foot flood stage, with steady rises expected.

The greatest concern centers around Newaygo County, where water levels reaching 12.0 feet begin to surround cottages and homes downstream of the city, especially near Sycamore Flats in Ashland Township. Low-lying roads and access points near the river could become impassable if water continues to rise at the projected pace.

In Osceola County near Evart and downstream in Bridgeton and Croton, similar river responses are expected, increasing the risk for flooded yards, parks, and riverside infrastructure. Residents near the river should begin securing outdoor items and prepare for possible evacuations if warnings are issued.

Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads, especially overnight when visibility drops. Charging devices and preparing emergency kits now can help reduce risk if conditions worsen midweek.

The Flood Watch remains in place through Sunday, with additional warnings likely if river levels continue climbing into flood stage by Monday night.
