Newark, New York – A prolonged lake effect snow event will impact Wayne County beginning early Sunday morning, bringing hazardous travel and several inches of accumulation through early Monday. The most significant snow will target the northeastern part of the county, where persistent lake bands may produce locally higher totals.

Snow develops around 4 a.m. Sunday as cold northwest flow off Lake Ontario organizes lake effect bands across the Finger Lakes region. Periods of moderate snow are expected at times Sunday and Sunday night, with the most intense snowfall focused over far northeast Wayne County. Areas closer to Newark will still see impacts, though snowfall amounts will vary sharply depending on band placement.

According to the National Weather Service office in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 a.m. Sunday through 4 a.m. Monday for Wayne County. Snow totals are forecast to range from 1 to 3 inches for much of the county, including Newark, while the far northeast corner could see 4 to 7 inches where lake snow bands persist longest. Visibility may drop quickly within heavier bands, creating near whiteout conditions at times.

Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate Sunday morning and remain difficult through the day and overnight. Snow-covered roads and rapidly changing visibility are likely along Route 31, Route 104, and rural county roads. According to transportation officials, lake effect events can produce drastically different conditions over short distances, catching drivers off guard.

Residents planning travel Sunday or early Monday should allow extra time and be prepared for sudden changes in road conditions. Snowfall rates may fluctuate quickly as bands shift, leading to brief bursts of heavy snow even in areas with lower overall totals.

Snow gradually tapers late Sunday night into early Monday as lake effect weakens, but lingering slick spots may remain through the Monday morning commute.
