Newark, DE – A deadly three-vehicle crash in Newark Wednesday evening has left one man dead and two others injured, shutting down a major roadway for hours as investigators worked to determine what led to the collision.

According to Delaware State Police, the crash occurred Wednesday at approximately 6:50 p.m. along South College Avenue (Route 896), just north of Old Baltimore Pike. Authorities said a Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling northbound allegedly crossed over the center median for reasons still under investigation and struck a southbound Chevrolet Silverado. During the crash, a Subaru Ascent traveling in the same area was also allegedly struck.

Police said the driver of the Jeep, a 45-year-old man from Newark, was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died. His identity is being withheld pending notification of family members. The driver of the Chevrolet, a 42-year-old Newark man, was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. The Subaru driver, identified as a 42-year-old man from Middletown, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately five hours while troopers conducted an on-scene investigation and cleared debris. The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the crash and is working to determine the factors that caused the Jeep to allegedly cross the median.
