Newark, DE – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving two school buses that occurred Thursday morning, October 23, 2025, at Gauger-Cobbs Middle School in Newark.

According to Delaware State Police, the incident happened around 7 a.m. when one IC 300 school bus was parked in the drop-off lane of the middle school on Gender Road. A second bus, positioned directly behind the first, drifted forward for unknown reasons as the driver was preparing to conduct an emergency exit drill, striking the parked bus.

The driver of the first bus, a 54-year-old woman from Wilmington, Delaware, was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Police said the driver of the second bus, a 53-year-old woman from New Castle, Delaware, was not injured. The buses were carrying 48 students at the time, but no student injuries were reported.

The school parking lot was closed for approximately four hours while investigators processed the scene.
