According to the Delaware State Police, troopers responded around 6:00 p.m. Friday to a reported theft at Christiana Mall, located at 132 Christiana Mall. Investigators learned a woman allegedly stole a victim’s cell phone from a kiosk inside the mall.
Police said the victim electronically tracked the phone to a shopping center in the 1100 block of Pulaski Highway in Bear. Troopers responded to the location after obtaining a description of the suspect.
After searching the area, troopers located the suspect inside one of the stores. Police identified the woman as Shaniya Clark, 21, of Newark. When troopers attempted to take Clark into custody, she allegedly resisted arrest and assaulted the officers.
Delaware State Police said two troopers suffered notable injuries during the struggle, and state police property was damaged. Both troopers were transported to a local hospital, where they were treated and later released. Investigators recovered the stolen cell phone and returned it to the victim.
Clark was taken into custody and transported to Troop 2. She was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on a $5,900 cash bond, police said.
She was charged with two counts of second-degree assault injuring a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with force causing injury, theft under $1,500, and two counts of criminal mischief under $1,000.
The incident occurred during the early evening hours, a busy period for mall shoppers, commuters, and workers traveling along Pulaski Highway.
