Buffalo, NY – Western New York is under multiple winter weather alerts as snow, ice, and strong winds are expected to impact the region through late Tuesday night, creating hazardous travel conditions and potential power outages.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Monday for areas including Buffalo, Rochester, and Niagara Falls, with snow and sleet accumulations between 4 to 8 inches and ice up to three-tenths of an inch. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph, increasing the risk of downed trees and power lines.
A Winter Storm Watch will follow from late Sunday night through Tuesday night for Oswego, Wayne, and Northern Cayuga counties, where lake effect snow may bring up to 24 inches of accumulation in some areas. Visibility could drop below a quarter mile at times, making travel nearly impossible, particularly during Monday’s morning and evening commutes.
Officials urge residents to drive with caution on slick roads and prepare for power outages. Rapidly changing conditions, especially in lake effect snow bands, will challenge travelers throughout the storm’s duration.
