Albany, NY – A winter weather advisory is in effect across parts of eastern New York and southern Vermont, with freezing rain and mixed precipitation expected to create hazardous travel conditions through late Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, the advisory covers Northern Herkimer, Hamilton, Warren, and Washington counties in New York, along with Bennington and Windham counties in Vermont. The alert remains active from 8 p.m. Friday until 11 a.m. Sunday.

Forecasters warn of light snow accumulations up to one inch and ice buildup between one and three-tenths of an inch. Conditions are expected to worsen overnight Friday as temperatures fall below freezing. Warmer air Saturday may briefly transition precipitation to rain before refreezing Saturday night, increasing the risk of black ice.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate, especially on untreated surfaces and rural roads. Commuters are urged to slow down, maintain extra distance, and monitor local advisories. The combination of snow and ice could also lead to scattered power outages, particularly in higher elevation areas.

Residents should check local transportation and school schedules for potential delays. Officials recommend using salt or sand on walkways and being cautious during outdoor activities to avoid injury from slips or falls.
