New York – Thick flakes swirl through the early morning light in Albany, coating trees, rooftops, and highways in a quiet but relentless December snowstorm. Plows are already scraping pavement along I-90 and the Northway, but visibility drops fast as another heavy band moves in from the west.

The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 1 a.m. Wednesday, with 6 to 9 inches of snow expected and locally up to 12 inches possible across the southern Green Mountains and Berkshires. The heaviest snow falls through midday into evening, tapering late tonight.

Travel will be hazardous or impossible at times, especially across bridges and higher elevations. Commuters should avoid unnecessary driving, allow extra stopping distance, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Wind chills in the 20s will make the air feel even sharper as the snow piles up.

By Wednesday, sunshine returns and roads begin to improve, but lingering slick spots will persist during the morning commute. The rest of the week trends calmer, with highs in the mid-30s and a chance for light snow showers Thursday before a cold, bright Friday.

This is Upstate New York’s first major snow event of the season — a classic early-December reminder that winter travel demands caution, patience, and preparation.
