Binghamton, NY — Central New York is under a winter weather advisory through 4 a.m. Friday, with snowfall and high winds impacting travel. Snow showers and squalls are expected to intensify Thursday afternoon, reducing visibility and creating hazardous road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall totals of 2-5 inches are predicted across the region, with localized areas near Syracuse and Cortland seeing up to 6 inches. Winds will gust as high as 50 mph, particularly along major routes such as Interstate 81 and Route 17. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, as blowing snow may reduce visibility to near zero at times.
Thursday will see snow showers taper off after 3 p.m., with highs near 33°F and wind chills dropping into the 20s. By nightfall, additional snow accumulations will blanket the area, especially east of Binghamton. Blowing snow will persist into Friday morning, as temperatures drop to 20°F overnight.
The weekend forecast offers some relief, with partly sunny skies expected Sunday. Saturday remains cold, with snow showers possible and a high of 32°F. Warmer weather will briefly return Monday, with highs reaching 46°F.
Residents should secure outdoor objects, monitor weather updates, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall. For the latest road conditions, call 511.
