Albany, NY – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for parts of eastern Upstate New York today as freezing rain is expected to create slippery travel conditions from late afternoon through early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, the advisory covers Northern Saratoga County and Southeast Warren County from 4 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday. Forecasters expect a light glaze to one-tenth of an inch of ice, enough to make untreated surfaces hazardous. Communities affected include Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Lake, West Glens Falls, and Glens Falls.
Even small amounts of ice can cause dangerous travel conditions, especially as temperatures dip toward freezing after sunset. According to the NWS, roads, sidewalks, and bridges may become slick quickly once precipitation begins, with elevated surfaces typically freezing first.
The timing of the freezing rain—coinciding with the late-day commute and early evening travel—could increase the risk of accidents across northern Saratoga and southeast Warren counties. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, allow extra braking distance, and be alert for icy spots disguised as wet pavement.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after midnight as precipitation ends and temperatures begin a slow rise into early Sunday morning. However, any untreated surfaces may remain hazardous until a full thaw occurs.
