A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for all of Suffolk County through 3 p.m. Sunday, as steady snowfall tapers off but dangerous travel conditions continue into tonight, according to the National Weather Service in New York.

Forecasters say storm total snowfall of 4 to 7 inches has been recorded across Suffolk County, with localized amounts near 8 inches, particularly in eastern sections. While steady snow is expected to end this afternoon, scattered snow showers may linger into early evening, adding light additional accumulation.

According to the National Weather Service, the greater concern develops after sunset, when temperatures — already in the 20s this afternoon — are expected to drop into the teens overnight. Any remaining slush or moisture on untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots will rapidly refreeze, leading to patchy black ice.

The advisory impacts Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, and Southeast Suffolk, including communities from Huntington and Smithtown to Riverhead, Patchogue, and Montauk. Officials warn that even roads that appear wet may quickly become icy, especially on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for slick spots, particularly during the evening and early Monday morning hours. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and steps as refreezing occurs.

While the Winter Weather Advisory is set to expire at 3 p.m., officials stress that hazardous conditions will persist well beyond that time due to falling temperatures and lingering moisture.

Residents are encouraged to check local road conditions through state and county transportation services and avoid unnecessary travel overnight if possible.
