A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across parts of central New York through early Monday morning, with lake effect snow expected to create hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.
The advisory covers Onondaga and Southern Cayuga Counties, including Syracuse and Auburn, where an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected before 7 a.m. EST Monday. Officials warn that snow-covered and slick roads could significantly impact the Monday morning commute, especially during early travel hours.
In Northern Oneida County, including Boonville, a separate Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. Sunday, with up to 1 inch of additional snow possible before conditions gradually improve later this afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, lake effect snow bands will continue to move through the region tonight, periodically reducing visibility and causing rapid changes in road conditions. Even modest snowfall totals may lead to slippery conditions on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach their destinations. Officials recommend checking the latest road conditions before traveling by calling 511 or using state transportation websites.
While snowfall rates are not expected to be extreme, forecasters emphasize that overnight snow accumulation combined with cold pavement temperatures will make conditions hazardous during peak commute times.
Snow showers are expected to taper off later Monday morning as lake effect activity weakens, allowing road crews time to improve conditions. Until then, residents are encouraged to use caution and avoid unnecessary travel overnight.
