New York State – A winter storm watch remains in effect as heavy snow and strong winds are forecast through late Thursday night. Areas including Syracuse, Utica, and Rome could see up to 14 inches of snow, with gusts up to 35 mph.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm is expected to begin late Wednesday afternoon, intensifying overnight. Travel could be treacherous on major highways, particularly the I-90 corridor, with reduced visibility from blowing snow. Commuters should avoid unnecessary travel Thursday morning and evening.

Local authorities urge residents to prepare now by ensuring vehicles are equipped with winter safety kits and refueling ahead of the storm. Power outages are possible due to the combination of heavy snow and wind, so charging devices and stocking emergency supplies are recommended.

As the system moves eastward, lake-effect snow will linger into Friday, potentially adding several inches to already significant totals. Areas downwind of Lake Ontario, such as Cortland and Chenango counties, may experience sudden snow squalls, further reducing visibility.

Temperatures are forecast to remain in the mid-20s, with wind chills making it feel even colder. This storm marks the first major snow event of the season, signaling the start of winter travel challenges.
