Binghamton, New York – A multi-day winter weather threat is developing across central New York, with freezing rain followed by heavy lake-effect snow prompting advisories and a Winter Storm Watch through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday evening through Wednesday morning for Onondaga, Madison, Northern Oneida, and Southern Oneida counties. Snow accumulations of a foot or more are possible in parts of the region, accompanied by wind gusts up to 45 mph.

In Onondaga County, including Syracuse, forecasters warn that heavy lake-effect snow may make travel very difficult to impossible, especially during the Tuesday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could also bring down tree branches.

Ahead of the snow, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Madison, Northern Oneida, and Southern Oneida counties from 4 p.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Monday. During this period, freezing rain is expected, with ice accumulations around one-quarter of an inch, creating hazardous road conditions and the potential for isolated power outages.

Cities impacted by the advisory include Rome, Utica, Oneida, Hamilton, and Boonville.

The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down and use caution while traveling, and residents are encouraged to prepare for possible power outages. Officials also recommend monitoring forecasts closely, as timing and impacts may change as the event approaches.

State road conditions can be checked by dialing 511.

For commuters, students, and workers across central New York, the combination of ice, heavy snow, and strong winds could significantly disrupt travel and daily routines from late Sunday through midweek.
