NEW YORK — A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect now until 6 p.m. Tuesday for Sullivan County, where heavy snow continues to blanket the region with total accumulations of 5 to 9 inches expected.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton reports that snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely through late morning into early afternoon. Commuters are urged to use extreme caution as roadways quickly become snow-covered and slick. Both the morning and evening commutes are expected to be severely impacted.

Visibility may drop sharply during heavier snow bursts, and travel could become treacherous on Route 17, I-84, and local mountain passes. Plows are working steadily, but rapid accumulation may outpace clearing efforts during peak snowfall.

Meteorologists warn that even short trips may take significantly longer than usual. If travel is unavoidable, drivers should carry extra food, water, and a flashlight, and ensure vehicles are equipped for winter emergencies.

By late afternoon, snow intensity is expected to taper as the system exits to the east. However, temperatures will remain near freezing, allowing icy patches to persist into Wednesday morning—especially on untreated rural roads and elevated surfaces.
