New York, New York – A widespread Winter Storm Warning is in effect across the New York City metro area, Long Island, southern Connecticut, and parts of northeast New Jersey from Friday afternoon through 1 p.m. EST Saturday, with heavy snow expected to significantly impact travel, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say snow accumulations of 6 to 9 inches are expected across much of New York City, northeast New Jersey, and southern Connecticut, with 7 to 10 inches possible in eastern Long Island. Portions of central and eastern Connecticut are forecast to receive 5 to 8 inches of snow.

The heaviest snowfall is expected between 6 p.m. and midnight, when snowfall rates may reach 1 to 2 inches per hour. During this time, visibilities could drop below one-quarter mile, creating near-whiteout conditions at times.

The warning covers all five boroughs of New York City, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, along with Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island. In Connecticut, affected areas include Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties. Portions of northeast New Jersey, including Bergen, Essex, Union, Passaic, and Hudson counties, are also included.

The National Weather Service warns that roads, bridges, and overpasses will become slick and hazardous, and travel could be very difficult, particularly during the Friday evening commute. Snow-covered roads and blowing snow may continue to affect travel overnight into Saturday morning.

Officials urge residents to delay travel if possible. Those who must drive should use extreme caution and carry emergency supplies, including food, water, warm clothing, and a flashlight.

The Winter Storm Warning is scheduled to expire at 1 p.m. EST Saturday, though lingering snow-covered roads may continue to impact travel beyond that time.
