Binghamton, New York – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. EST Saturday for large portions of central New York and northeastern Pennsylvania, with heavy snow expected to create hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.
In New York, the warning includes Onondaga, Madison, Northern Oneida, Southern Oneida, Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, and Sullivan counties. In Pennsylvania, Northern Wayne, Southern Wayne, and Pike counties are also under the warning. Affected cities include Syracuse, Utica, Rome, Oneida, Hamilton, Cortland, Binghamton, Norwich, Oneonta, Monticello, Honesdale, and Milford.
Forecasters say total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches are expected across the region. Snow began developing Friday afternoon, with the heaviest snowfall anticipated between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., before gradually tapering off overnight into early Saturday.
The National Weather Service warns that travel could be very difficult, particularly during the Friday evening commute, as roads become snow-covered and visibility is reduced. Untreated secondary roads and rural highways are expected to become slick quickly during periods of steady snowfall.
Officials say the hazardous conditions may persist overnight, especially as snow continues to accumulate before ending early Saturday morning. Motorists may encounter rapidly changing road conditions during the evening hours.
Residents are urged to delay travel if possible. Those who must drive are advised to carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water, in case of delays or breakdowns.
Drivers in New York can check the latest road conditions by calling 511. In Pennsylvania, motorists are encouraged to monitor updates from PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission via 511pa.com.
The Winter Storm Warning is scheduled to expire at 7 a.m. EST Saturday, though lingering snow-covered roads may continue to impact travel into the morning hours.
