New York, NY – As New York heads into Black Friday weekend, state and city weather officials are urging homeowners across New York City to complete winter preparations before another round of freezing nighttime temperatures arrives.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), this year’s La Niña pattern could bring more rapid temperature changes across the Northeast, with NYC expected to see a mix of mild afternoons followed by sudden overnight freezes. Forecasts show parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx dipping into the upper 20s late Friday into early Saturday, conditions that can increase the risk of burst pipes, heat system failures, and ice-related roof issues.
Home maintenance specialists recommend focusing on high-impact winterization tasks this week. That includes insulating exposed pipes in older buildings, especially brownstones, multifamily homes, and pre-war apartment structures throughout the city. Clearing gutters and rooftop drains is also essential—NYC’s flat roofs are particularly prone to ice buildup during freeze–thaw cycles.
Energy experts advise homeowners to seal window drafts, which are common in older brick buildings, and to check radiator valves, boiler performance, and thermostat operation before colder December temperatures arrive. Fire officials note the importance of testing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, especially in homes using supplemental heat sources or older boilers.
Emergency managers encourage New Yorkers to check on elderly neighbors or any residents who may need help preparing their homes before the holiday weekend’s colder stretch.
