Binghamton, NY – Central New York faces an increased wildfire risk through Friday evening, as dry air and gusty winds combine to create hazardous fire conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Special Weather Statement was issued Friday morning warning residents across 16 counties of an elevated risk of wildfire spread until 11 p.m. Low relative humidity levels between 25% and 35%, paired with northwest winds gusting 20 to 30 mph, are driving the threat.

Counties affected include Yates, Seneca, Southern Cayuga, Onondaga, Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Madison, Southern Oneida, Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, Tioga, Broome, and Delaware. The region’s dry grass and brush may ignite quickly and spread fires rapidly, particularly in open or wooded areas.

Officials strongly discourage any outdoor burning. The annual statewide burn ban is in effect until May 14, and no burn permits are being issued during this time.

Residents are urged to avoid any ignition sources, such as discarded cigarettes or machinery that may spark. If fire starts in dry vegetation, it could spread uncontrollably.

Fire departments across the region remain on alert. Authorities emphasize community cooperation in minimizing fire risks during these volatile conditions.
