ALBANY, NY — A major weather system will bring widespread rain to New York starting Wednesday night, with totals reaching up to 1.5 inches across much of the region. Higher elevations, including the Catskills and Taconics, may see rain transition to snow late Thursday into Friday.

According to the National Weather Service, rain will begin Wednesday night and continue into Thursday, delivering much-needed moisture to the area after an unusually dry stretch. However, this shift in weather comes with risks. Gusty winds and wet roads could create hazardous travel conditions, particularly along I-87 and other major highways. Residents in higher terrain should prepare for possible snow accumulations as temperatures drop Thursday night.

Sunday’s conditions include a continued elevated fire risk due to dry fuels and low humidity, despite the rain in the forecast. The statewide burn ban remains in effect until November 30, and officials urge residents to avoid any outdoor burning or activities that may spark fires.

The five-day outlook shows a mix of sun and clouds Monday and Tuesday, with highs reaching the mid-50s. Rain dominates midweek, with highs around 48 degrees by Thursday. Showers could linger into Friday, keeping roads wet and temperatures in the low 40s.
