Newark, NY – Residents in Wayne and Northern Cayuga counties should brace for difficult travel conditions tonight as a strong lake-effect snow event targets Upstate New York. The National Weather Service issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning beginning 1 a.m. Thursday and lasting through 7 a.m. Friday, with 5 to 10 inches possible in the most persistent snow bands.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the narrow bands developing off Lake Ontario are expected to intensify overnight, leading to periods of heavy snowfall and rapidly changing road conditions. Forecasters say wind gusts could reach 40 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow that may significantly reduce visibility on rural roads and open stretches of highway.
The most hazardous period is expected during the Thursday morning and evening commutes, when snow squalls may shift quickly. Drivers in communities including Newark, Fair Haven, Wolcott, Lyons, and Red Creek should prepare for slowdowns, sudden whiteouts, and slippery pavement. Travel may become dangerous at times, especially along east–west roadways where crosswinds can push snow across lanes.
Meteorologists emphasize that lake-effect snow falls in highly localized bands, meaning one town may see near-whiteout conditions while nearby areas experience lighter flurries. Motorists are urged to keep extra distance, allow additional travel time, and carry emergency items such as blankets and charged phones.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to report snow totals and conditions through its website or social media channels as the storm evolves.
