Syracuse, NY – Heavy lake-effect snow is pounding portions of central New York today, with forecasters warning of dangerous travel conditions as snowfall rates reach 1–2 inches per hour.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, most of the snow accumulation will occur Friday morning through tonight, tapering off by Saturday morning. The heaviest bands are expected from Syracuse to Utica, where 8–12 inches of snow are likely, with 6–8 inches possible in surrounding areas including Hamilton and Auburn.
Forecasters also caution that snow squalls may develop this afternoon across central and northeast Pennsylvania, briefly reducing visibility and causing rapid accumulations on roadways. These quick bursts of snow could create slippery, icy travel and sudden whiteout conditions.
Additional light snow accumulations are possible Saturday morning before conditions improve. Drivers are urged to monitor road conditions closely, reduce speed, and keep extra distance between vehicles during heavy bursts of snow.
The NWS advises residents to stay updated on the latest weather alerts and use caution if traveling today or tonight, particularly along I-81, I-90, and U.S. 20 corridors.
