ALBANY, N.Y. – Strong westerly winds continue to buffet eastern New York, southern Vermont, and western Massachusetts early Thursday, with gusts up to 50 mph prompting a High Wind Warning that remains in effect until 8 a.m. EST.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, the most intense winds are expected through the early morning hours, particularly across the Capital District, Mohawk Valley, Berkshires, and southern Green Mountains. “Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Scattered outages are expected,” meteorologists warned.
Wind gusts have already exceeded 45 mph in parts of Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, and Pittsfield, with isolated power outages reported across Albany, Rensselaer, and Bennington Counties. Travel may be hazardous for high-profile vehicles on Interstate 87, I-88, and Route 7, especially on exposed ridges and bridges.
While the strongest gusts will taper after sunrise, blustery 30–40 mph winds are likely to persist through the afternoon, possibly causing additional debris and minor property damage. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and use caution near trees or power lines.
Utility crews across the region are on standby to respond to outages, and drivers should treat all dark intersections as four-way stops until power is restored.
