WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A biting fall chill settled over the Hudson Valley and southern New England early Monday as a Freeze Warning remained in effect through 9 a.m., with temperatures dipping into the upper 20s and low 30s across interior suburbs. The first widespread freeze of the season could damage outdoor plants and mark the end of the local growing season.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, the warning includes Northern Westchester County, Putnam County, and Orange County in New York, along with Northern Fairfield, Northern New Haven, Northern Middlesex, and Northern New London Counties in Connecticut, and Western Passaic County in New Jersey. Some areas, including Orange County, are under a Freeze Watch again late Monday night through early Tuesday as another cold surge arrives.

Local agricultural agencies urge residents to cover sensitive vegetation and disconnect outdoor hoses. The Connecticut Department of Agriculture noted that late-season growers should expect crop damage where protective measures aren’t taken.

Drivers on the Taconic State Parkway, I-84, and Route 9 should watch for patchy frost and reduced visibility before sunrise. Temperatures will rebound into the upper 50s this afternoon under mostly sunny skies, bringing a brief reprieve before another frosty night returns.

Cool, dry conditions are expected to dominate the week, with a gradual warmup possible by Friday as high pressure shifts offshore.
