Watertown, New York – Travel across northern New York is becoming increasingly dangerous as intense lake effect snow continues to hammer the Eastern Lake Ontario region, burying roads under deep drifts and slashing visibility during the Thursday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until Friday evening for Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties. The strongest lake effect bands are expected to persist through Friday, especially across the Tug Hill Plateau, where an additional 2 to 3 feet of snow may accumulate. Wind gusts up to 40 mph are creating widespread blowing and drifting snow, making travel nearly impossible at times.
State and local crews report rapidly deteriorating conditions on major routes, including stretches of Interstate 81 near Watertown and secondary roads across Lewis County. Whiteout conditions may develop quickly under the most intense snow bands, leaving drivers with little warning. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel, keep vehicles fueled, and ensure phones and backup power sources are fully charged.
Another round of winter weather is already on the horizon. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Saturday night through Monday evening, with widespread heavy snow again possible across the region. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as confidence increases, and officials warn impacts could extend well into early next week.
