New York City, New York – As winter officially arrives with the winter solstice this Sunday, colder nights across New York are raising concerns about frozen and burst pipes, a leading cause of winter home damage statewide. With temperatures dipping below freezing overnight, homeowners are being urged to take steps now to protect plumbing and prevent costly repairs.

According to the National Weather Service and state fire officials, prolonged cold allows exposed pipes in attics, basements, crawl spaces, and exterior walls to freeze quickly. When pipes thaw, cracks can release gallons of water in minutes, damaging walls, flooring, and electrical systems.

Across New York City, older buildings and homes with unheated areas are especially vulnerable. City officials recommend insulating exposed pipes, sealing gaps around vents and access doors, and keeping thermostats set no lower than 55 degrees, even when away. Letting faucets run at a slow trickle overnight can also reduce pressure inside pipes and lower the risk of freezing.

Residents are warned never to use open flames, torches, or propane heaters to thaw frozen pipes due to fire risk. If water flow drops or leaks appear, shutting off the home’s main water valve immediately can limit damage.

Cold conditions are expected to persist into early next week, and additional advisories may be issued as winter settles in across the region.
