Buffalo, NY – Rain, strong winds, and a wintry mix are moving across Western New York today, creating hazardous travel and the potential for power outages across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a round of rain began spreading across the area Wednesday morning, with initial snow and freezing rain affecting the eastern Lake Ontario region. High temperatures will range from 42 to 50 degrees, but lows tonight could drop into the upper 30s. A brief lull in precipitation is expected this evening across WNY, before a new wave of rain and embedded thunderstorms pushes east overnight.
Some thunderstorms could become strong to severe, particularly in areas east of the Genesee Valley. Winds will intensify ahead of these storms, shifting from southeasterly to southerly, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph from Wednesday afternoon through 6 p.m. Thursday.
Gusty conditions may knock down tree limbs, unsecured objects, and possibly power lines, especially in exposed areas near Lake Ontario. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and stay alert for updated warnings.
Drivers should prepare for slick roads, especially where freezing rain falls, and those in affected zones should monitor local updates and be prepared for possible power disruptions.
