Rain taps against windows and damp pavement glows under headlights as winter tightens its grip across New York. Air feels raw and unsettled, and conditions remain active through the weekend. What starts as rain today evolves into a colder, riskier pattern by Sunday, with snow showers and freezing temperatures back in play for the Southern Tier.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, showers continue today with highs near 49 and south winds gusting over 30 mph at times. Roads across Broome County may stay slick through the afternoon, especially along I-81, Route 17, and local hills. Reduced visibility could slow travel during heavier bursts.

Rain becomes steadier Saturday, mainly after midday. Temperatures hold near 41, keeping precipitation liquid, but the persistent dampness raises hydroplaning concerns. Drivers should plan extra time and avoid sudden braking on wet surfaces.

By Sunday, colder air slides in. Rain may mix with snow during the morning, then shift to scattered snow showers through the day. Highs hover near 38, with gusty winds adding a biting edge. Snow looks light, but slushy patches could develop on untreated roads, especially north and west of Binghamton.

Sunday night brings the bigger concern. Lows fall into the mid-20s. Any leftover moisture may refreeze quickly, creating black ice before dawn Monday. Side streets, bridges, and shaded areas become prime trouble spots.

Monday turns quieter and colder with partial sunshine and highs near 36. Tuesday moderates slightly, reaching the low 40s.

Winter remains firmly in control despite slowly increasing daylight later this month. Traveling Sunday or early Monday? Let us know what road conditions look like where you are.
