New York – Snow squalls sweep off Lake Erie as daylight breaks, turning pavement gray and visibility uneven across western New York. Narrow bands pulse inland, coating neighborhoods within minutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. today through 7 a.m. Tuesday for the Buffalo metro and surrounding counties. Lake effect snow totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected, with the heaviest accumulation likely south of Buffalo, including parts of southern Erie and Genesee counties.
Snow will intensify through late morning and afternoon as persistent lake bands develop. Roads can shift from wet to snow-covered quickly. Visibility may drop suddenly, especially on open stretches of roadway. Gusty winds add blowing snow, increasing the risk during the evening commute.
Drivers should plan extra time and keep headlights on. Expect the most difficult travel where bands stall. Conditions may vary block by block, a classic lake effect setup.
Temperatures stay cold today, hovering near 28°F, with wind chills in the teens. Snow showers continue tonight before gradually easing Tuesday morning. Any melting during the day could refreeze after sunset, raising black ice concerns.
By Tuesday afternoon, snow chances diminish and temperatures recover into the mid-30s. Wednesday remains mostly cloudy and breezy, with highs near 39°F. A brief moderation follows later in the week, though additional rain or snow showers are possible Thursday night as temperatures fluctuate near freezing.
