New York – Headlights glow in thick fog across Buffalo this morning, and slick patches are already forming north of I-90 as freezing rain moves in.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday for northern Erie and Wyoming counties. A Dense Fog Advisory continues through 7 a.m., reducing visibility to as low as a quarter mile at times. Drivers along I-90, the I-190 corridor and Route 33 should expect rapid changes in visibility and traction.
Freezing rain may coat elevated surfaces with a few hundredths up to one-quarter inch of ice, especially across the hilltops of northern Wyoming County. The greatest icing risk sits north of Buffalo Niagara International Airport and I-90. Even a light glaze can trigger spinouts and slower travel.
Temperatures hover in the mid-30s today, with periods of rain and patchy fog continuing through the afternoon. Warmer air will increase runoff into creeks and rivers. Rising water could shift river ice and heighten the risk of localized ice jams. Stay alert near known flood-prone areas.
Tonight turns mostly cloudy with lows near 31. Thursday rebounds to 43 with mainly cloudy skies before steadier showers return Thursday night into Friday. Friday brings widespread rain and gusty winds, followed by a transition to rain and snow showers Friday night.
Saturday and Sunday trend colder, with highs in the 30s and additional snow shower chances. Flash freezing becomes a concern if wet pavement refreezes after sunset this weekend.
Early next week stays chilly before a gradual warming trend hints at early Spring warmth beyond President’s Day week.
