New York – Rain streaks the pavement this morning, but conditions are already shifting fast across western New York. Gusty winds whip across open areas as warmer air gives way to a sharp winter turn, setting the stage for snow, blowing snow, and difficult travel by afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, multiple alerts are active today, including a High Wind Warning, Winter Weather Advisory, Lakeshore Flood Warning, and a Flood Watch. Southwest winds increase rapidly, with gusts reaching 55 to 60 mph at times. Rain changes to snow by afternoon as temperatures fall from the 50s into the 20s by evening.

Travel conditions deteriorate quickly after midday. Blowing snow reduces visibility on I-90, Route 33, and along lake-effect prone corridors south of Buffalo. High-profile vehicles may struggle, especially on exposed stretches near Lake Erie. Lakeshore flooding is also possible, with strong winds pushing water toward the Buffalo waterfront and Niagara River.

Snow showers continue into tonight with localized accumulations of 2 to 4 inches possible, especially in heavier bursts. Rapid cooling raises concerns for flash freezing on untreated roads as wet surfaces turn icy after sunset.

Tuesday remains cold and unsettled. Snow showers linger, and gusty winds keep wind chills in the teens. Conditions slowly improve by midweek, though temperatures stay well below normal heading into New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Day 2026 stays cold, with scattered snow showers possible and highs near the low 20s. Anyone traveling for end-of-year plans should allow extra time and be prepared for sudden visibility drops.

Secure loose outdoor items today and avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind and snow periods.
