New York – Breath turns white instantly this morning as bitter cold settles over western New York. Side streets crunch under frozen tires, and Lake Erie looks restless as another round of heavy snow lines up behind the cold.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect early with wind chills as low as 15 to 20 below zero. A Winter Storm Warning follows from Sunday morning through Monday evening for Niagara, northern Erie, and Genesee counties. Snow totals between 8 and 14 inches are expected, with the highest amounts near Buffalo and Niagara Falls.
Temperatures remain well below freezing through the day, locking in any snow that falls. Snow develops Sunday morning and becomes heavier through the afternoon and evening. Visibility drops quickly during heavier bands, especially near the lake. Gusty winds may cause blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility.
Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate along I-90, I-190, Route 33, and secondary roads. The Monday morning commute is likely to be heavily impacted. Plows may struggle at times during peak snowfall. Flash freezing remains a major concern as compacted snow turns icy, especially on ramps, bridges, and untreated roads.
Residents should prepare now. Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm window. Charge devices, stock essentials, and keep vehicles fueled. If travel is unavoidable, slow down and allow extra stopping distance. Dress in layers and limit time outdoors due to dangerous wind chills.
Snow tapers Monday night, but cold air lingers into midweek. Wind chills may again approach 15 below zero early Tuesday. Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook suggests colder-than-normal temperatures remain in place, with drier conditions gradually returning later next week.
Additional advisories or lake-effect snow statements may be issued as conditions evolve.
