New York, NY – Blistering midweek heat will push temperatures to 98°F in parts of New York City on Wednesday, with a growing threat of afternoon and evening thunderstorms that could disrupt travel across major corridors like I-87 and the FDR Drive.

According to the National Weather Service, a Hazardous Weather Outlook and Extreme Heat Warning remain active until 8 p.m. Tuesday, with Wednesday bringing continued highs in the mid-90s and a heat index near 100°F. Scattered storms are expected after 2 p.m. Wednesday, posing flash flood and lightning risks through the evening. Areas at higher risk include Queens, Staten Island, and portions of Westchester and Rockland counties.

Drivers should plan for delays and potential ponding on roads during the evening commute. The city’s Emergency Management Office advises avoiding peak heat hours between noon and 4 p.m., staying indoors with air conditioning, and checking on vulnerable individuals. Those working outdoors should hydrate frequently and wear light clothing.

The combination of extreme heat and high humidity may also worsen air quality, prompting an Air Quality Alert until 11 p.m. Tuesday. Sensitive groups, including children, seniors, and people with respiratory conditions, should limit outdoor activity.

Looking ahead:

  • Wednesday (June 25): High 92°F, storms after 2 p.m., humid
  • Thursday: Cooler, high 76°F, showers possible (50% chance)
  • Friday: Mostly cloudy, high 68°F, slight shower chance
  • Saturday: Storms after 2 p.m., high near 75°F
  • Sunday: Partly sunny, storms possible, high around 80°F
