Binghamton, New York – Temperatures hovering in the 30s today will quickly fall below freezing tonight, setting up slick roads as scattered snow showers move into the Southern Tier after sunset.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, highs will top out in the mid-30s to low 40s before dropping into the 20s overnight. Snow showers are expected to develop after 6 p.m. and continue through the overnight hours, though accumulation is expected to remain light.
Communities along I-81, Route 17, and I-88, including Binghamton, Elmira, Ithaca, and Oneonta, could see reduced visibility and patchy coatings on untreated roads. Bridges and overpasses are most at risk for freezing as temperatures dip below 32°F.
Drivers should slow down during the evening hours and allow extra travel time, especially on elevated roadways. Residents are encouraged to check tire conditions and keep mobile devices charged in case of delays or minor outages.
Snow showers taper off by early morning, but cold conditions will linger into the start of the next day. Additional advisories could be issued if temperatures fall faster than expected.
