New York, N.Y. – Strong wind gusts could make travel hazardous across New York City and Long Island within minutes, especially on bridges and exposed roadways during peak commute hours.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, the 8-to-14 day outlook from Friday, March 27 through Thursday, April 2 shows below-normal temperatures across the region along with an increased likelihood of strong wind events. Gusts could reach 40 to 45 mph, particularly along the coast and in urban corridors.
In New York City, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, crosswinds may impact elevated roadways and bridges such as the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, RFK Bridge, and George Washington Bridge. High-profile vehicles may be especially vulnerable during stronger gusts.
Across Long Island, including Nassau and Suffolk counties, stronger coastal winds could create difficult driving conditions along the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Sunrise Highway, and Ocean Parkway. Isolated power outages are possible where wind gusts impact tree limbs and power lines.
Wind chills are expected to fall into the upper 20s and low 30s during overnight and early morning hours, adding extra risk for those outdoors. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and use caution when traveling in high-wind areas.
This pattern is expected to persist into early April, with additional wind advisories possible as conditions evolve.
